My first podcast episode aired: December 22nd, 2009. There are a number of reasons why I've been able to host A View from My Window for nine years. There have been MANY people who have mentored me, trained me and listened to me. All of that was the perfect recipe to to start the fire burning and planting the seeds for my intense love of, wanting to be and eventually becoming a journalist. I'm a self-taught journalist who honed my craft by watching others in the field. I knew I needed to see and feel news in action. All the trips to WLFI News 18, WISH-TV and the relationships I have, even to this day, with everyone I met, especially at WLFI, made me know for a certainty that I needed to be a journalist! I really got to see firsthand that being in a TV job is much more than lights, camera, makeup, hair and nice clothes. Those things are certainly a part of the job, but the most important and lasting part is the person you are behind the camera. We're all human and have ''off'' days, but always remembering that you want to be a warm, caring, invested, engaged person to the people you interview, work with or meet. They deserve the gift you bring to them, because when you think about it, whoever is in front of you, is bringing a gift that they possess to you. The gift of telling you who they are and what drives them to do the work they are doing. All these things I keep in mind before recording an interview for my podcast and then I try to use those things while the interview is going on so that I can show them that I care about the things they have shared with me. It's really the most beautiful gift that I can weave together a story so that listeners can get the full picture of who is being interviewed. That is the part that keeps surprising me, even after all these years! I'm grateful that The Arc of Indiana was the organization that was the one to say YES! Thank you to ALL the staff! I have the best co-workers! Thank you to my producer Sally Morris and my sound engineer Bryce Dickerson for helping me with questions, concerns, brainstorming and just plain ' ole fun and laughter!!! Thank you to my mom for always believing in me and never voicing any doubt, but always supporting me! For always being my "backbone"! Thank you to everyone who I have interviewed on the podcast, too! It truly has been a privilege to tell your stories, hear your backgrounds and get to know you better! Thank you goes out to retired executive director of the Arc of Indiana, John Dickerson for being the one to see my potential and RUN with it! You will always have a special place in my heart for how you made my dream a reality! Thank you to the current executive director Kim Dodson who has continued to make me feel valued and appreciated and is always up for an interview whenever we need her and is always such a bright spot whenever I come in the office! Yes, I have the best boss! Thank you to Paul Howell, who became my mentor when he worked as an anchor at WLFI... Thank you so much for getting the ball rolling all those years ago! You were the biggest cheerleader for my dreams back then and it was the strongest motivator to keep my dream alive! Thank you to Ken Oguss who was always ready for the ride! Along with your forward motion, you always helped me slow down and really hone my craft and explore what was possible!! For that I am ever grateful! My first interview where I was being interviewed was with Joe LePage! I was so nervous, because it was my first time being the one interviewed! Looking back on that interview in 2010, I was nervous, and you could see it, but Joe couldn't have been sweeter!! Thank you so much Joe! You interviewing me back then is one of my favorite memories!! It takes a village, and the people I have met that have become part of my village to accomplish my dream of hosting a podcast for 9 years... You ALL are the best! Thank you for coming along for the ride! I am so glad to have come this far...and I can't wait to see the places we go!!

A quote lovers' reflection...
I've always loved quotes. Visual reminders that fill your mind with positive thoughts, pushing out the negative like a bulldozer! I've always had a knack for writing, words and language. That doesn't mean you should ask me about adverbs, adjectives or pronouns! I mean, I know they add something to the structure of a sentence, telling you who, what, where, when, why and how.. yada, yada and so on. My love of words and writing began early because of just how powerful they are, and in this case, powerful for the good! I LOVE coloring! The adult coloring book trend will never go out of style for me! Is it because I can't draw anything but a stick person to save my life? Yes, but that's our little secret! I love coloring pages that put good thoughts in your head and heart. I colored one not too long ago that said, "Life is Sweet" (the one that's pictured, in fact!) That statement got me thinking. Sometimes that statement can mislead others into thinking that you must not have any problems and that everything is rainbows, unicorns and candy corn for you!! But, that's not always the case. Life is about choices. The things that shape you and the experiences you have gone through are many times dealt with privately, not viewed by the eyes of others. When you have something that plaques you, whether it was years ago or more recent, it takes time to come to grips with pain, emotions and frustration. Then it takes coping strategies that allow you to put things into perspective and move on stronger and more resilient then before. Granted, the negative emotions will rear their heads and you will have to work with that, but acknowledging those emotions is nothing more then being human....That's OK! You can also be proud of how far you have come. Think about it. Whatever the mountain you are climbing or have climbed, didn't defeat you! It may have knocked you down for a bit, but you got back up and are still fighting, still breathing, your heart is still beating and just think of all those who love who you are and are cheering you on! I'm writing this post to tell you I've been through every ounce of every feeling and emotion I've put on this digital page! I am here to tell you it does get better and even now, when the negative emotions do come, it's not so earth shattering. It takes constant effort, but the effort is well worth it. So, the next time someone asks: "How are you?" You say "Good!"....you're really saying, "Life is Sweet" and I'm still a work in progress!

A look back through the Window of the past year!
It's hard to believe that another year has come and is almost gone. What has never left, though, is the love I have of interviewing, meeting new people, hearing their stories and bringing them to you... It truly never gets old or boring! If my Grandpa Applegate could see me now... he would be beaming with pride! He was my mom's dad. He was always such a stable, caring man in my life! I was proud to call him one of my grandparents! He was the one I was sitting with in my living room the day I decided I was going to be in news. When I looked back at him and said: "Grandpa, I want to be a news anchor", I knew that I would have his support. He's been gone for 22 years and still to this very day, I wish I could call him or sit with him and celebrate the achievement of the goal of doing what I love! He was my loudest cheerleader and my most sought after support...just like my mom is....her daddy taught her well! How I was raised and how my family treated me and others around them, really shaped not only myself as a person, but also the kind of anchor I have become. I was always included in family activities, never excluded, but loved, and very much embraced. In all the interviews I do, that is the mindset I come in with, striving to make the person feel at ease. An interview style that allows the the person's voice and story to shine through, showing them dignity and empathy, as the story takes shape and starts to unfold. Reflecting over this past year, my emotions and heart are always touched to see the resilience of the human spirit and the determination of those whom I have the pleasure of meeting. I want you to know that all the interviews I've done this year and for the past 7 years, have all had a great impact on me.
Another major milestone of the Arc of Indiana, was the opening of the Erskine Green Training Institute and Teaching Hotel in Muncie. It's been the first year for the training program to teach students a variety of skills in the hospitality industry. It's been amazing to see what this institute has done for all those who have taken the leap to climb out of their comfort zone and realize what they are truly capable of. It's been incredible to see!
THANK you so much to all of you who have listened to the podcast over these last seven years. I'm truly grateful for all of you! Thank you for allowing me to bring you the important issues and inspiring stories that the podcast covers. Thank you for taking the time to meet me and telling me why you listen to the podcast and how it has brought a smile to your face!!
Thank you to ALL of the Arc staff and especially my team... my producer Sally Morris and my sound engineer Bryce Dickerson. Thank you for making my work so rewarding...we are truly a team! I can't imagine this podcast without you! You bring stability to me when I'm nervous and a pat on the back when I'm unsure of myself (which happens more often than not..right? haha!!) The best medicine we throw in though, is laughter!! Thank you as always...The Arc is VERY special to me!!
To my Mom: You had the hardest job: raising me! Your love, confidence and hilarious humor has always gotten us though! I will always be forever grateful for your support!

Disability Awareness Month 2016: Where am I now?
March is Disability Awareness Month each year. I have to admit, I actually kinda geek out during this month! Yes, we do get covered on the news a bit more and I get to see the cool things that others do to celebrate the month. I especially love the the humorous and empowering t-shirts! Most importantly though, I reflect on how far I've come in my life. From the day of my birth and my parents wondering if I would survive the first couple days of life, to being a journalist in the field of my choice! Of course, there was a lot of hard work in between. I've come to realize that I'm the same as everyone else, but drastically different. Goals and aspirations are slow to come, at times. My brain, I say, is able-bodied, but my body is slow to follow! Giving up, though, would never do anything good for me so I refuse to give any time to the idea. Instead, I look to build up! The key to helping myself is helping others. Whether it's a warm hello with a smile, spending time with friends and family, shopping for gifts for friends, sending cards, writing, working with my team on my podcast and interviewing incredible folks...all this builds me up and gives me the strength to continue to shine and be the happiest I can be everyday! So, this year for Disability Awareness Month, my advice to you is something that Scott Chesney said, an international speaker from Verona, NJ, recently interviewed on my podcast: "Don't let something life changing happen to you before you make a change". There are always going to be challenges, emotional ups and downs, bumps in the road, things that can cloud your vision, but always ask yourself: "Would you want it to be worse?" It could be worse in an instant. You have the power to choose your attitude toward whatever situation you find yourself in. Happiness is where it's at, people! :) You are more than your disability tells you you are! I want you to be able to look back on 2016 Disability Awareness Month and be able to say: Where am I now? I'm farther than I ever thought possible! What a GREAT choice....Right? :)

Sprout: Opening up the world of Acting and Traveling to the disabilitycommunity
I've always loved the nature shows on TV where the host gives you a guided tour into the sites and sounds of another country, city or culture. I get so excited, almost giddy, to tell the truth. I can't wait to breathe in the new surroundings as the camera angles just draw you in. The way those shows are produced gives you the experience of a lifetime without leaving your living room! I've always been a lover of stage shows and musicals. In fact, you will eventually hear me say that I want to be on the stage. Both art forms allow you to transport yourself to another place and time. I've had the pleasure of interviewing Executive Director of Sprout, Anthony Di Salvo, and was delighted to find that he adores what he does and the impact that he and his staff have on the lives of the people they serve!! How do they do this, you ask? Sprout is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to helping people with developmental disabilities grow through challenging, creative and fun experiences that enhance socialization, self-confidence and inclusion. Creative fun experiences and inclusion?? You had me at hello! Their travel program offers opportunities to it's participants, in the company of their peers, with the support and supervision of Sprout Leaders. Some of the trip options include Lake George, Cape Cod, Orlando and Washington D.C., to name a few. Over the years, international travel to places like Mexico, Italy, France, Spain and Germany have been offered, too. And guess what?? Not only does Sprout have a travel program, but they also have film programs where participants are taught everything there is to know about filmmaking and acting! Something else I love is that Sprout is in New York City. I ADORE New York City! The MECCA of artistic expression, especially on the stage. Really there is not enough space on this virtual paper to tell you all about this fabulous organization... You MUST find out more for yourself! Here's the website.. http://gosprout.org/

Safe travels on seeing the world and I hope you continue to get many standing ovations for your outstanding performances..... GO SPROUT!! :)

Organization Profile: IPAS
IPAS, or the Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services, was recently featured on "AView from My Window". I love profiling "new" (to me) organizations who work hard to give people with disabilities a life that is full and meaningful. IPAS simply wants everyone to be treated the same, which means having the same human, legal and civil rights as everyone else.
The team at IPAS, Executive Director Dawn Adams and Director of Communications Jessica Trimble, plus the dedicated interns on staff are very dedicated to their mission and responsibility of providing the needed support to the disability community in navigating the legal and human rights system, which can be very lengthy and confusing. What's impressive about Jessica and Dawn is their motivation in helping the folks they serve. They seek knowledge from other organizations like The Arc of Indiana and the imput from others, including myself, regarding what protection and advocacy mean to us. The concept of advocacy wasn't even something I could have wrapped my head around, until I started my job at The Arc of Indiana, and saw how much it was promoted and encouraged. The more confidence I 've gained in coping with my disability, the more appealing advocacy has become to me. I found that I could implement advocacy in different ways and in different areas of my life. Advocacy is a gift that is to be shared, so that not only you can live the life that you want, but more importantly so that others can live the life they want and deserve!
If you or someone you know would benefit from the services IPAS offers, feel free to contact Jessica Trimble at IPAS phone: (317).719.3944

My Life, My Choice: You deserve to choose how you live
Sometimes making decisions can be difficult, especially if you feel pressured, perhaps. You may not want to hurt someone's feelings by making the wrong decision, so the tendency is to put it on the back burner, or if someone asks you what you think about something...you might choose to answer with a shrug, "Oh, I don't know...I'm not the greatest at making decisions." It may be that you just haven't been given the chance to make decisions, especially by those who don't know you or your situation.
What if a person was willing to help you understand the options you may have, so that you can make informed decisions. As far as where you want to live, if you can live with a roommate, or which services are available to support you in making the life you dream of a reality. Well, good news! The Arc of Indiana has you covered! The "My Life, My Choice" project was launched from July through October 2012. A team of two gathers information to assess your unique situation. One of the team members is a person with a disability who understands where you are, how hard it can be to make decisions that can be life changing, but, also how good it feels to take control of your own life. Don't be afraid to talk openly about how you feel, where you see your life going, or who you see being part of your support team. There are no right or wrong answers in the interview! It's a time for you to be heard and supported!
This project touches me very deeply! The dignity and respect shown to people with disabilities in doing this project is outstanding!! How deeply it touches a persons' heart to know that are heard, understood and cared for!

A look back at the Pathways to Employment Premiere :)
![]() |
| The Narrator (me) and the filmmaker Ken :) |
![]() |
| Brandon Boas, A photographer featured in the film! :) |
Aside from the technical aspect though, Ken's heart comes straight though the screen to touch your heart! It comes from the fact that Ken isn't just a filmmaker and storyteller in title only. He invests time, energy and interest in the subjects whom he films. For the Pathways to Employment documentary, you become a fly on the wall, as it were, by being taken along for the ride as the viewer and given a very personal view into the lives of the six individuals featured. What you will first notice as you watch these videos, is the amount of positivity that is in each video. Sometimes, to an outsider, the person with a disability may seem to have a lot of roadblocks and some may wonder, how will they ever accomplish the things they want? These videos show how each person has accomplished their goals by replacing the word "CAN'T with CAN and they see the challenge as an opportunity. Their team of cheerleaders and supporters focus on their potential, which makes their differences fade. Simple equation: Find a way to turn the seeming negatives into positives. That's what is fully showcased in these six videos....and when you have a filmmaker who fully understands that and embraces that idea, in collaboration with the Arc of Indiana, the end result is a motivating beautiful piece of work!!
What made it such a happy night for me was not only seeing Ken's hard work be recognized, but I was happy for the stars themselves! I've heard their stories, many of them being guests on my show, telling me about the pain of being told they can't, or that no one understands them. At times they have been stared at, or laughed at.....but not on the premiere night! That night they were applauded and their faces glowed! I was so glad to be a part of that night...words can't even begin to say how much!

Assistive Technology know how with Wade Wingler!

Wade Wingler got into assistive technology when, as a 10 year old kid, he obtained his first computer. Even at that early age he was able to take the leap into writing software. As he grew up, he had the privilege of watching his friends and family work with people with disabilities. Later, he studied social work and sociology in college. After explaining this, Wade told me "My story stopped being interesting at that point." But, as I listened to him further, I realized that his story doesn't stop being interesting at all! In fact, his story just keeps getting better!
Twenty years ago, it all started with a reply to a newspaper ad seeking someone who could: Teach people with disabilities how to use computers. With his interest peaked, he applied and became, Director of Assistive Technology at Easter Seals Crossroads, and you can tell he enjoys every single minute! Technology has made a major switch from the DOS computers to now having Google Driverless Cars, Iphones, and IPADs.... For many of us, the technology boggles the mind, but not for a tech savvy guy like Wade! :) In fact, after I interviewed him, he excitedly told me that he had a check in his pocket and was going to make the grueling trip to the Apple Store to buy IPADS for the Easter Seals Equipment Lending Library! Truth be told, the trip was not going to be grueling for him at all!! As the field of technology transformed, Wade decided he didn't want to keep this vital information about assistive technology to himself. That's when the podcast known as Assistive Technology Update was born! The idea for the podcast came from the fact that as Wade says, "There was always so much assistive technology news coming across my desk, I got to thinking, how can we share this information?"
A weekly podcast keeping you up to date on the latest developments in the world of Assistive Technology for people with disabilities? Yes, please!! The half hour show is produced every week, filled with latest news, interviews, show notes and much more! Listeners from all over the world have tapped into this all access look in to the world of assistive technology! What an impact this podcast has on those in need of assistive technology!
The podcast is the best of both worlds for this podcast host because it offers him the ability to be "a little bit social worker and a little bit nerd." Wade is a great guy to meet and a perfect host for this podcast! If you haven't listened to the podcast, I encourage you to do so. It is a wonderful resource for the the disability community and beyond!
Thank you Wade for answering the newspaper ad twenty years ago - all your efforts are making a difference in people's lives and making our lives easier to live! Thank you! Thank you to Easter Seals Crossroads as well, for being forward thinking people and continuing to show that people with disabilities are people, with potential to accomplish great things, with support from people like you!

Jumping into the Twitter-sphere! (tweet, tweet!!)
| Twitter is complicated! So thought my brain :) |
The plunge into Twitter has been a long time coming. Why, you ask? It was due to my own thinking that it was going to be too complicated. Trust me, it happened with Facebook, too. Fear of the unknown and getting accustomed to "the lay of the social media land". Hashtags, @symbols, tweets..... What if I put a hashtag in the wrong spot in a tweet? Or what if I don't put the @ symbol in the tweet that let's a person know I'm talking to them? Will they feel ignored? What in the world is a retweet? Is it loud? Will someone be offended if I retweet something that is now old news, but to me, is something I think looks cool? Kinda like....if a friend of yours goes to the mall and buys a hip dress and then you go to the mall two weeks later, and realize the next time you see your friend that you have the EXACT SAME DRESS!! (gasp!!) HA!...Ok, Twitter for me, wasn't quite life-altering, but it was much easier then I thought it was going to be and REALLY fun! I have met and connected with a lot of nice people so far, and hope to keep connecting more and more!
I'm an internet podcast show host of a podcast called AView from My Window. The podcast takes you inside the lives of people with disabilities. Their stories in their own words, the services they receive, and the organizations that help make their lives better through their advocacy and hard work! I'll tell you more about how AView from My Window got it's start in another blog post, but that's why Twitter has come into the life of this podcast show host and I'm certainly glad I get to share the podcast with all of you! I hope you enjoy listening as much as I love hosting! It's truly a dream job!
I'm Michelle Fischer, Host of AView from My Window....and I have entered the TWITTER-SPHERE!!!!! (Tweet, Tweet) :)

Mom: Thank you for being YOU! Thank you for seeing beyond the disability!
On May 8, 2012, I interviewed Kerry Fletcher and Kathleen McAllen, two moms who have kids with disabilities. This interview was one of the most touching and emotional interviews I have done! And I thank both of these ladies so much for opening up their hearts and giving us a view into the joys of raising a child with special needs, along with the heartbreak of the diagnosis and the grief of their child having to deal with the lifelong struggle that they never asked for. I admired both Kerry and Kathleen's attitudes when they talked about that first diagnosis. Kerry looked at it this way : "We had been seeing delays for a while before we got the diagnosis, so the diagnosis was the cherry on top. We knew why and we had answers so then we knew what direction to go." When I asked Kerry how she sees the future for her kids, she said : "That's why we have the IEP set up at school to direct them. We don't know what that future will look like yet, but we try to look at all angles and are hopeful that they will be independent and have jobs"
Kathleen said: "My husband and I are both practical people, and so with the diagnosis, we thought, ok, we're not crazy...this is real..now we have something to work with." In the same breath, both moms agreed that there is a grieving of the loss of what you think is going to be. It is a process for not only moms, but dads and siblings and even other family members who live far away. Kathleen gave a word of encouragement to people who make the extra effort to get to know those who have disabilities: "Make that extra effort to get to know them, you will get more than you give!"
The diagnosis of your child with a disability is not the end of the world. It's the beginning of a new world... one to get used to and to be informed about. Kathleen and Kerry have been through all the uncertainty, but have come out on the other side....and they hope that their story helps others to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
This interview also hit home for me. My mom has been my cheerleader and advocate for many years now. She has helped me through the ups and down of my teenage years into adulthood, coping with the shadow of my disability. The things she said and did allowed me to put the challenges aside and view these opportunities as a chance to grow and flourish and she was by my side through it all!! Mom: THANK YOU!!
Thank you to all the moms out there who care so deeply for children with special needs! Your love is such a gift to us! "A Mother's love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do the impossible"-Unknown Author

United Cerebral Palsy 2012 Attitude Dinner- teaches that a positive attitude means everything!
| Logo for the Annual Attitude Dinner. Love it! |
They are cheerleaders beyond compare for people with disabilities - and not because that's what it says to do in their job descriptions, but because they both have a genuine heartfelt desire to see others succeed. They are a team that helps reach that persons' ultimate goal: NOT to be defined by cerebral palsy! In fact, every member of the UCPAGI team which forms the Board of Directors and Development Committee, have the same goal.
I look forward to the Attitude Dinner every year. This night beautifully showcases every conceivable ability that people with disabilities possess and then giving them utter joy by recognizing the courage, effort and lessons they teach all people about how a persons' attitude, a positive attitude, can help them achieve goals and do what others may see as impossible!! The Awards Ceremony is the best part, LOTS of happy faces!! :)

| I received the 2012 Character Award! |
It was such an honor to receive the 2012 W. Thomas Schemmel Character Award as host of "A View from My Window". What a wonderful night! The excitement was just like I was getting a Grammy!! Thank you so much!!
One aspect this year was different than years past. Brandi Linn faced a serious health crisis when it was found that she had developed two brain aneurisms and was leaking spinal fluid. After having brain surgery, her comeback was remarkable. As Colin Vaughan described the account of her recovery in detail, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. We are so happy to have our Brandi Linn back on her feet and healthy again!
With one Attitude Dinner in the books for this year, next year is another chance to be inspired by people helping people. What is the primary motivation for helping others? Attitude, Attitude, ATTITUDE is everything!
